Singaround and Music Session
Sunday July 15th 2012
The July Sing & Play night saw quite a few new faces among the 40 - 50 folks who came to sing a song, play a tune, or just enjoy the company. We enjoyed a Japanese folk song from a young Japanese visitor; and a nice selection of songs from Nottinghamshire duo Jill and Bernard Blackwell: first-timers at the Poppy but who have been performing around the area for many years.
Special treats from amongst the regulars included a jolly joining-in song in French from Catherine Soubre; a spur of the moment collaboration on a bluesy song from Dave Collins and Jim Helliwell; and a number of Woody Guthrie songs scattered across the evening, in celebration of his 100th Birthday - if only he'd been around to enjoy it! With two poems from Chris, and several sets of tunes to join in with, it was another most enjoyable evening.
The previous weekend had seen the Poppy's 'Human Jukebox' out on show at the Lady Bay 'Open Gardens'. Many thanks to all the performers who contributed to a successful weekend: Nick Murphy and members of his ceilidh band; Marc Block; Sally & Jim Helliwell; Lawrence Leith; Andy Cooper & Dave Quick; Ally Turner & Juliet Woodin; Dave Collins; Peter Burnham; Dave Walters; Julie Palmer; and Phil Preen. Between us we raised £67 for the Notts Wildlife Trust.
