Singaround and Music Session

Sunday April 14th 2013

April's sing and play night was a bit of a special one. Regular supporter of the club since the beginning, Marc Block, had his first CD 'The Hawthorn Spring' officially released the following day, so tonight we asked Marc if he would like to give us a couple of feature spots to perform some of the songs. The CD has been very well received by all, and picked up excellent reviews from Mike Harding and Mark Radcliffe on their radio shows.

Amongst the regulars we had a terrific range of songs and tunes from: Jim Helliwell, Dave Walters, Malcolm Goodall, James Strawbridge, Annie Smith, Dave Collins, Ali and Juliette, Al Atkinson, Jan Robertson, Norman, Rob and Bronwyn, Phil, Julie, Claire, Trevor, Fred, Harriet, Ann, - and a joke from Brian Franks! Well-known local singer and concertina player Steve Ploughwright visited us for the first time on a sing & play night, and totally new visitor Huw gave us what he said was his first ever performance with a very creditable 'Barley and the Rye' - please come and see us again!

Highlights from the floor (for me) were yet another excellent new song from Dave Collins - Land of Broken Dreams; Steve Ploughwright's 'Green Man'; and a terrific set of tunes from Jim Helliwell.

Marc Block sang a short set to finish each half of the session, including 'Live Not Where I Love', 'Monday Morning Blues', Bob Dylan's 'High Water', 'Sule Skerry' and - to finish the night in style - his totally excellent song inspired by his visits to the Falklands, 'Windswept Islands'.
