Jez Lowe - Sunday 11th September 2016
Jez Lowe is one of the best known and hardest working performers in the country - and beyond - singing solo; with his band 'The Bad Pennies'; as part of The Pitmen Poets show; and in a duo with Steve Tilston (and more besides). His songs are just as well known, being recorded by a host of other big-name artists.
For this concert Jez was performing solo and was in fine form. We heard many of those favourites, including 'London Danny', 'The Bergen', 'Greek Lightning', 'Old Bones', and 'The Lampton Worm'; as well as songs from more recent collaborations - 'Taking on Men' from the BBC Radio Ballads series; and 'Pitmen Poets' from the show of the same name which features Jez with Benny Graham, Bob Fox and Billy Mitchell.
There was new material too, including two examples of the humour in many of Jez's songs. 'The Wrong Bus' is a song about an office worker who gets on a London Omnibus and finds himself in wartime France; while 'It's a Champion Life' was a new song for Christmas, based very loosely on the movie classic of a similar name!
A very welcoming Poppy audience enjoyed a concert of memorable songs, excellent singing and songwriting, and plenty of humorous introductions and stories from a master of his craft.
Thanks go to Steve & Julie Wigley and Sheila Mosley for starting each half of the concert with a song; and to Phil, Julie and Dave, Corinne Male, Sheila Mosely, Ally and Owen, Steve & Julie Wigley, and Ian Price for staying to sing at the post-concert singaround.
